EVENT: MINUS MALARIA in DOUGHERTY WEST LOUNGE
Blood:Water initative hosts anti-malaria event Thursday, 4pm

Blood : Water Mission is a national organization with the aim of achieving clean blood and clean water throughout the continent of Africa. Our chapter at Villanova University works to raise funds for the organization, particularly their 1,000 wells project (aimed at building and teaching people to maintain wells throughout Africa), and spread awareness about the challenges facing Africa.
We decided to partner with the Against Malaria campaign as Malaria becomes an even more prevalent issue with the AIDS crisis in Africa, which Blood Water: Mission is fighting against. Malaria is a preventable, treatable disease that takes 1 to 3 million lives per year. 70% of deaths are children under the age of 5, and malaria is the leading killer of pregnant women worldwide.
Minus Malaria is an event hosted by Blood : Water Mission, Villanova chapter, from the Center for Peace and Justice, inform the public about the malaria crisis and raise interest in combatting the disease. The event —which will open with a speaker and includes photos and information— will be held Thursday, 19 November 2009, in the West Lounge in Dougherty Hall, and is ACS approved.

PELÍCULA: LA HISTORIA OFICIAL

La película argentina La historia oficial se puede ver en la sala audiovisual 3 —Viewing Room 3— en el sótano de Falvey Library, el lunes 16 de noviembre y el martes 17 de noviembre, desde las 5:00 hasta las 7:00 de la tarde. Es un requisito del curso ver y comentar la película.
La tarea relacionada con la película será escribir 5 frases originales explicando la película y su contexto histórico. El miércoles en la clase, tendremos una breve prueba con preguntas orales sobre la película, y después hablaremos de ella, su trama y sus personajes.

A Script for Living vs. Authentic Free Will: the Ethical Theatre

As the contemporary novelist, Milan Kundera, wrote:
"We live everything as it comes, without warning, like an actor going on cold. And what can life be worth if the first rehearsal for life is life itself?" [Kundera, Milan. The Unbearable Lightness of Being (8).]
Using St. Augustine's defense of free will and intellect as moral necessities, this seminar will explore questions of the nature and limits of human understanding, and how we might re-shape a world already scripted for us. Does moral authenticity allow for the following of a pre-determined script, or are we in fact free?
With each text, we will examine the human struggle to understand whether there is a 'script' for whose revelation we wait and which, once revealed, must be followed, or whether we have the liberty, indeed the responsibility, to invent our own script. Questions of authenticity, community, and individuality, will illuminate debate about the trials of the modern world.

NAUFRAGIOS PUBLICA EDICIÓN de OTOÑO

Recoge otra vez contribuciones de muchos países, en literatura, crítica y arte visual. Abarca textos de poesía, cuento, ensayo y entrevista, con una infusión rica de pintura y fotografía.
Además de obras de los integrantes del taller literario —incluidos Carlos Trujillo, María Elena Arias-Zelidón, Silvino Edward Díaz Burns, Rodolfo Figueroa, Andrés González Sánchez, Magnolia Pérez Garrido, Salvatore Poeta, Joseph Robertson, Carolina Yancovic—, cuenta con la colaboración de escritores y artistas de once países... La experiencia es algo común a todos los seres vivientes, así como única e incomparable en cada iteración, cada momento, cada recepción o desvío. Es lo que buscamos o fingimos no buscar; es el motor primordial de nuestros pensamientos, y es lo que los pensamientos pretenden definir, modificar, superar. La política es el combate estratégico de las ideas en relación a la experiencia humana prevista, o en la justicia, intenta ser la corrección de la experiencia anti-humana.
En Naufragios creemos que la experiencia del autor es una búsqueda, una navegación por mares a veces turbulentos, a veces suculentos, a veces líricos, a veces incómodos. Creemos que el autor, sea poeta, cuentista o investigador, busca formular una nueva cartografía con cada excursión hacia lo desconocido. No es que el arte de la tinta (líquida o digital) tenga que ser vanguardista; es sólo que al hacer el arte de la tinta, el escritor dibuja nuevas representaciones del universo de la experiencia... VILLANOVA SUMMER PROGRAM in VALPARAÍSO, CHILE
Seis semanas de estudiar en la costa de Chile

Students can earn 6 academic credits for two Spanish-language courses through Villanova's summer program at the Universidad Católica de Valparaíso, in an historic port city and cultural capital of Chile's central region.
The program runs from May 28 to July 8, 2010, and requires a minimum 2.75 GPA and the successful completion of intermediate college-level Spanish prior to departure.
Students have the opportunity to select from courses in Spanish language, Chilean culture, political history or economics, and possibly a 3-credit 4-week internship, depending on language level.

Students can earn 6 academic credits for two Spanish-language courses through Villanova's summer program at the Universidad de Cádiz, in the sunny south of Spain.
The program runs from June 30 to August 4, 2010, and requires a minimum 2.75 GPA and the successful completion of two semesters of college-level Spanish prior to departure.
Students have the opportunity to select from courses in Spanish language, or literature, an Spanish civilization. depending on language level. The program also offers excursions to Seville and Granada, Córdoba, Toledo and Segovia.

En inglés, la frase más famosa que aprovecha la poesía del verbo "to be" suele ser la meditación "To be or not to be" de Hamlet, protagonista de la obra de Shakespeare. En español, esa frase se traduce como "Ser o no ser". La frase abarca la cualidad existencial o trascendente del verbo ser. O sea:
SER se usa para expresar características permanentes o constantes. Cuando decimos 'Ella es alta' o 'Él es moreno', hablamos de una característica de su ser, constante y que no cambia.
El verbo estar, en comparación, habla de condiciones impermanentes o estados pasajeros. Es útil recordar que la palabra estado tiene, en español, el verbo ESTAR como raíz. De estar, llegamos a estado, y así es fácil recordar que las condiciones impermanentes o estados pasajeros, como las emociones, necesitan el verbo estar. [Seguir leyendo...]

- Spinelli et al. Interacciones. Workbook/Lab Manual/Video Manual, 6th edition, 2009.
- Audio Program to accompany Interacciones.
- Any Spanish-English dictionary.
Please make sure the text is Interacciones, by Spinelli et al., the SIXTH edition, and please make sure the materials are complete, including the main text, the workbook and the audio program. You may choose any Spanish-English dictionary.

LEARNING SPANISH IN SPANISH

This update is posted to remind students that Villanova's intermediate Spanish courses are given principally in the Spanish language. For instructional purposes, greater exposure to the language is prioritized.
Certain technical information, like dates of exams, specific grading procedures and emergency information, will be delivered in English, but students are expected to participate in class in Spanish, and to formulate questions as best they can in Spanish.
The content of discussions and projects will be designed to fit the level of study at which the course is operating and the range of vocabulary in use at any given time. These news updates will also be posted in Spanish as the semester progresses.
