HURRICANE IRENE PREPAREDNESS
Links to emergency resources, maps & updates
August 27, 2011

Public Safety officers will be stationed throughout University owned residence halls to assist as they are able. Be advised however that Public Safety, VEMS, and other emergency responders will be able to respond only to true emergencies during the storm. Non-emergency services such as escorts and transports will be suspended while dangerous conditions exist. Once the storm passes and conditions are safe, another Nova Alert will be issued giving the “all clear.”

In the event of a power outage, the primary Public Safety phone numbers may not operate. If you are unable to reach Public Safety, a phone line not connected to the University's main phone system will be active at the Public Safety Dispatch Office. That phone number is 610-519-0524, but should only be used if the main public safety numbers: 610-519-4444, 610-519-5800 and 610-519-6979, are not available.

ACS: MODERNITY & its DISCONTENTS: FALL 2011
A Script for Living vs. Authentic Free Will: the Ethical Theatre
August 19, 2011

As the contemporary novelist, Milan Kundera, wrote:

"We live everything as it comes, without warning, like an actor going on cold. And what can life be worth if the first rehearsal for life is life itself?" [Kundera, Milan. The Unbearable Lightness of Being (8).]

Using St. Augustine's defense of free will and intellect as moral necessities, this seminar will explore questions of the nature and limits of human understanding, and how we might re-shape a world already scripted for us. Does moral authenticity allow for the following of a pre-determined script, or are we in fact free?

With each text, we will examine the human struggle to understand whether there is a 'script' for whose revelation we wait and which, once revealed, must be followed, or whether we have the liberty, indeed the responsibility, to invent our own script. Questions of authenticity, community, and individuality, will illuminate debate about the trials of the modern world.

CLIMATE TALK #3: UTOPIA or OBLIVION
Global solutions to a global crisis: climate justice & the science of viability
Date: April 7, 2011 @ 2:30 pm
Location: First Floor Lounge, Falvey Memorial Library

For the third ClimateTalks roundtable event of the academic year, two faculty members will present advanced analysis of the climate crisis, from the historical, ethical and scientific points of view, and we will moderate a policy debate among students working on environmental issues.

The discussion will be framed by Buckminster Fuller's admonition that our advanced industrial civilization was reaching a point where the choice between Utopia and oblivion was not only possible, but was a likely outcome of hyper-advanced "world-around" technologies, communications and commercial and political structures.

We will examine key related questions and challengs and propose some ideas for how humanity can move forward in the midst of this complex crisis. [More info...]

A young, foreign director, filming in Zimbabwe, talks about the media ban, what it means for people there, for the integrity of the political process, and the kind of risks to which journalists are subject, when they dare to do what all people aspire to do: to get a look at the truth of a situation, and to communicate the human sense of it.

CLIMATE TALK #2: ONE ENVIRONMENT vs. RADICAL FREEDOM
On sustainable balance & the meaning of shared responsibility
Date: Thursday, February 17, 2011, 2:30 - 4:00 pm
Location: First Floor Lounge, Falvey Memorial Library

We often treat "the environment" as if it were an alien entity, something that surrounds us, and with which we may at times interact, but which is, somehow, separate from us. Environment does mean "surrounding medium", or the like, but what surrounds us is also, in terms of transfer of energy, surrounded by, i.e. affected by, each of us. We are individuals, but who rely for all our contacts and engagements, on the surrounding medium. There is, in effect, no closed system, and there is but one environment.

How, then, do we square this scientifically demonstrable truth with the fact of our separateness, our unique inner life, our rights as human individuals, our desire to embrace existence from a standpoint of radical freedom? Existentialism has grappled with this problem: if we are what we do, if we determine our experience by way of perceptions, drives and choices, which are all actions toward a reality we construct, then why should there be any commitment to the Other? CLIMATE, ENERGY & ETHICS ROUNDTABLE
On the Economic & Political Dynamics, Solidarity & Science of the Climate Crisis
Event date: Thurs., Nov. 11, 2010, 11:00 am
Location: Falvey Library First Floor Lounge

At the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, in the First Floor Lounge of Villanova’s Falvey Memorial Library, Joseph Robertson (Romance Languages & Literature), Sally Scholz (Philosophy), John Olson (Biology) and Chaone Mallory (Philosophy), will participate in an interdisciplinary discussion of the most complex scientific and public-policy challenge of our times: the destabilization of global climate patterns and the means by which an entire civilization can address the mounting crisis.

Securing our economy and environment against the corrosive impacts of burning carbon-based fuels will require a concerted nationwide effort, rooted in sound policy and bold incentives, to steer the nation’s energy markets toward more sustainable, clean and renewable resources for power generation. This event will address the economic, political and technological dynamics of that process, as well as issues of political solidarity and environmental justice. [Read more...]

FREEDOM SCHOOL SEMINAR & ESSAY
The Space of Hope: Communication & the Human Bond
21 January 2010

Hope is not an essence or commodity to be extracted from the cold earth of injustice; it is not a character trait; it is a process of thinking toward, in living time, the ways in which what should be better might be. Hope is not something we derive from a neat metaphor or a good example, but from our own effort and the resulting bonds we are able to forge and to protect. It reaches us when we choose to overcome the problem of control, strip deterministic arguments of their false power and start from the place where we are. The human place. Defined by the quality of our connections to the world around us.

LA EXPERIENCIA COMO ADIVINANZA
Editorial note for the fall edition of Naufragios
2 noviembre 2009

Tips on when to use SER or ESTAR, with link to online resource
30 agosto 2009

[Seguir leyendo...]

The content of discussions and projects will be designed to fit the level of study at which the course is operating and the range of vocabulary in use at any given time. These news updates will also be posted in Spanish as the semester progresses.
