The Aspirations of Memory

- Joseph Robertson -

1. WHAT IS GATHERED

i.
every turn & juncture within the world is the temptation of a promise to escape from the world

ii.
what is fragile stands (un)strangely firm in torrents of noise unabashed by consciousness

iii.
a directionless utterance disavows itself & so persists displaced in being

iv.
there is wealth in shadows’ imperceptible agitations like there is trust in a beam of light

v.
what is without flaw operates like a trap impossible to avoid

vi.
resistance by itself becomes its own defeat before the mute metal mood of a knowing surrender

vii.
silence is communication in full unfettered the permanent resonance of a mystery

viii.
what is gathered gathers life a web of possibility closing distance becoming heat

ix.
this pressure of what has gathered makes a place tremble against its borders

x.
what moves in the shape of meaning obeys not rules of propriety but of liquid precision

xi.
we continue inside shreds of a cloudburst that precedes our specific continuing

2. SCULPTURES & SAVANNA GRASSES

i.
glass & air & salt & light & the waters & a resonance & the dance

ii.
to make sculptures from thought & passion you will have to engage the elements

iii.
proceeding from one to another greeting the possibility of bounty & of prayer by instinct

iv.
inside the space of night’s oblique plunge the anatomy of an intimate finding also falls

v.
a whisper of rust a dissonance the covenant required to make a symbol speak

vi.
there is yearning like savanna grasses at the point of initiation of a discourse

vii.
at times of slight or burgeoning clarity everyone is without a home

viii.
when clarity (tidally) subsides & density takes hold everyone is entirely at home & well

ix.
we dwell in precisely those environs which no amount of effort will allow us to escape

x.
we live with passion because passion recognizes need & need provides stories that lead to salvation

xi.
salvation & story & clarity & rust & the grasses & a famine & a chance

3. INHERIT THE SHAPES

i.
keep silent if in silence you feel the touch of an inward light

ii.
the echoes of an unimaginable fortune undulate beneath this stillness

iii.
inherit the shapes of our becoming with the wisdom of a shading of what runs away

iv.
the waters the colorless waters the unthinking colorless waters the determined

v.
unthinking colorless waters falling into beauty without a stitch of pretense upon them

vi.
ice like madness ice like justification ice that speaks eloquently & in secret about hoary secret gains

vii.
these winds of acquisition winds of promise & program & fertile patterning of landscapes

viii.
stretching sideways into perpetuity seeking something softer than silence

ix.
living watchfully you may inherit the shapes of unremembering that keep forgetting away

x.
our forgetting our broad forgetting our traditional broad forgetting

xi.
inflected into gems & rainfall

4. THE ASPIRATIONS OF MEMORY

i.
if we find despair at work amid the stars we find life surviving intelligence

ii.
nothing disappears

iii.
even disappearance is another apparition of what has been or wants to be

iv.
there is vibrance in the word

v.
it is the appearance of persistence versus disappearance that gives life

vi.
it is the mischief & responsibility of the veil that is most of all tendencies sacred

vii.
the aspirations of memory mark the borders of our love for shadows grouped under ‘fortune’

viii.
can ‘essay’ not be said to mean experiment & poetry ‘invention’?

ix.
that pluriform dovetails may commune to make an essay of a poem & life itself into the logic?

x.
an essay on the meaning of silence we little emperors must welcome such a visitor

xi.
the meaning of the aspirations of memory is the form they derive from one terrific freedom

5. BEGINNINGS

i.
no place could have contained the fires & the decibles of his madness

ii.
ascendancy is not an easy enterprise for all the false pleasures it entails

iii.
no beginning & no end: that is the secret shape of every story

iv.
we found platinum as powder pouring forth from the yellow river

v.
they determined we were explorers & demanded we sell our quarry

vi.
they needed (the seriousness of) his tears his sobs his sorrows but not him

vii.
though you may counsel the lost you cannot console a being whose work abides no temporality

viii.
our story begins in chiapas with the birth of an albino bull

ix.
she had resigned herself to a motherless childless imploded existence

x.
he loved her impeccably though her name was ‘axia’ & he had never seen her face

xi.
the child was born in the midst of vast waters a seascape worthy of a distant age

6. A DANCING PERSISTENCE

i.
swift noon sounds converge collapse without giving away their names

ii.
ventilating silent whirring fans clamped to the roof of our existence announce another

iii.
ache if you like mourn if you like know if you like or ask

iv.
to what end this dense interruption we inhabit? to what end a graceful fragmentation of hours?

v.
the taste of what cannot be obtained by tasting floods & admires taste & is gone

vi.
comfortable evening sounds converse commingle in a generous confession of names

vii.
we eat of life speak of life make shapes of life & glow in our secrets

viii.
to hear a trial play out in meteoric ravel to see clearly a dancing persistence

ix.
memory a clay molding heated or cooled according to mirth

x.
sidereal urgings write the music of slow but impatient footfalls over ice

xi.
sheer midnight sounds convulse cry out anointing themselves whole & seep into recognition

7.  HOLLOWS PRIOR TO ALL THINGS

i.
rhythm mystery antiquity the splash the splatter filling hollows prior to all things carried

ii.
absolution becomes a fixture becomes an asphalt becomes a thread becomes an aspiration begot

iii.
in time one forgets the sediment that wakes incredulous shouts to one another's happening

iv.
what you could not know sounds like hornets' buzzing edged in silk

v.
a soft impertinent beginning yields all eternity to its own game of weight & contradiction

vi.
one mountain is a volume of opportunity for the later formation of oceans

vii.
the human eye is a mountain rising rising in search of its full original truth

viii.
the human body is an ocean laced with eyes & spirits of another mettle

ix.
beyond every question we continue to exist inside answers that refuse to be answers

x.
future time is a bed without design molten incoming unannounced disallowed defiant

xi.
interpret layerings-on of rainfall as voice urging voice to provide solace in space & be

8.  A CUNEIFORM CHOREOGRAPHY

i.
in domesticity a right made cavernous by the fecund threadbare apparition of a single doubt

ii.
everything that by its own initial volition curls or adapts a cuneiform choreography

iii.
the whimsy-not-whimsy that calls forth & allows new sublimations of absence

iv.
the peril-not-peril that marks a shift in consciousness

v.
this uprooting of votes that is also an ingesting of chemical solutions

vi.
in the rifts among the pillars that separate parallel agglomerations of phantasmagoria

vii.
we walk the margins of razor-thin highways invested in the making of mind

viii.
a beginning amid beginnings winning pyrotechnic alterations in the flux

ix.
purpose must become a monument to what it seeks

x.
wings that resemble a flood of coincidings against dissonance

xi.
in domesticity ferocity redoubles its irregular muscle & ascends to foment definition

9.  A FESTIVAL APPROACH

i.
this is why dreams end without endings

ii.
why furtive glances must be something other than furtive to give fruit

iii.
this is why crimson adorns frustration in the ancient rites

iv.
& deep intimations of a cobalt sea clothe the lust as yet unspecified

v.
it is this mask of perpetuity that initiates

vi.
gaping feral inhibitions that herald the improbable fix

vii.
an ending that exists only where it has never before appeared

viii.
it is this need for continuation that expedites a discontinuation

ix.
a festival approach to the mire that works an echo

x.
repeating in the many musks a formality become divine

xi.
the venial mire of a martyr's urging the story forth
