Laboratory Exercise:  Map Analysis

(mapanal.htm)

For this exercise, you will need the following.

Thoughtfully look through the maps you have collected. Although you are to submit the entire collection (they will be returned to you), you should now select five that you will analyze and discuss for this assignment.

Spend some time thinking about all of the components of maps; about their special attributes; about what makes a map useable for some purposes but not for others. Referring back to any and all of the materials for this course, make a list of all of the various aspects you might be able to evaluate about maps.

Comment on the cartographic integrity of each of the five maps you selected. Use the information you have learned throughout this course and be as thorough as you can. Some of the criteria you listed may not apply to every map you selected. Simply state this to be the case.

Be sure to include as complete a bibliographic reference as possible for each map in your collection, including those not discussed. This reference may be written somewhere on the map sheet, on the sheet of paper you use to mount the map, on the outside of an envelope used to hold the map, or on an attachment.

This laboratory should be like a professional portfolio. Organize your materials with the maps collected but not discussed first. Then follow with each of the five maps and its respective analysis and discussion. Conclude with your comment sheet.

Enjoy this last laboratory assignment!
